Hot Spearman-Burns wins South Island golf title
  
Wellington golfer Peter Spearman-Burn won the South Island stroke play championships after a dramatic finish at Terrace Downs Golf Club in Canterbury today.
Spearman-Burn sunk six birdies on his way to a six-under par 66 today to close out the tournament on even par.
It was enough to head off Scottish backpacker and overnight leader Mark Hillson, who finished two shots back in second after carding 72 today.
Hillson was on contention on the 18th hole but pulled his approach shot left into tussock and had to take an unplayable and settle for a bogey, gifting Spearman-Burn with the victory.
"It's been really windy all week, today was windy but playable, compared to the second day which was really tough," Spearman-Burn said.
"It's challenging when it's windy and you have to be really accurate but it's a great test of your golf."
Pakuranga's Cecilia Cho dominated the women's tournament to the end, shooting a final-round two-over 74 today to finish 12 shots clear of Pupuke's Lydia Ko, who was another nine shots better than the rest of the field.
Teenager Cho finished two-under for the tournament.
She had the misfortune of suffering a nosebleed as she came down the 18th hole but despite blood dripping on her arms as she pulled out her clubs the Pakuranga golfer managed to maintain her massive overnight lead.
